What is Kaine’s Crucible?

Hayden Kaine has been shaped for command since birth.

Elite Academy. Political bloodline. A future engineered down to the smallest detail.

Then a routine off-world observation mission goes wrong.

The official report says one thing.
What Kaine remembers is something else entirely.

This is the origin story of the man who will matter when the Shattered Empire era begins—a tight military science fiction novella about loyalty, control, and what happens when reality refuses to follow the script.

Why the Founder's Edition is Different

This is more than a prequel novella.

The Founder's Edition transforms the story into a dossier—a layered record of what happened, how it was explained, and what was deliberately hidden.

Inside the annex, you’ll find:

  • official briefings and operational doctrine
  • redacted intelligence files and personnel profiles
  • conflicting reports and rewritten narratives
  • internal vs public versions of key events
  • psychological evaluations and training material
  • fragments of truth buried inside controlled information

This edition is built for readers who like to dig beneath the surface—and question who controls the story.

The transport ship emerged from the Jump Gate into Nova Esperança's orbital space, the familiar blue-white flash of transdimensional exit giving way to the star-studded blackness of normal space. The abrupt shift from the strange, timeless sensation of jump travel left Hayden disoriented—his inner ear struggling to readjust to the return of artificial gravity while his stomach performed an uncomfortable somersault that reminded him why he'd never enjoyed gate transitions.

The transport's engines thrummed as they shifted from jump configuration to standard thrust, the deck plates vibrating beneath his feet. Around him, the other cadets were experiencing similar reactions—Wong gripping the edge of his seat with white knuckles, Ramirez consulting his datapad with the focused intensity of someone fighting motion sickness, and Sharon maintaining her typical stoic expression despite the slight pallor that suggested she wasn't immune to jump aftereffects either.

As his equilibrium returned and the queasiness subsided, Hayden pushed away from his acceleration couch and made his way toward the main viewport, drawn by the sight of their destination. The other cadets followed suit, their conversations a mixture of nervous excitement and curiosity as they caught their first glimpse of a true frontier world.

Nova Esperança hung below them—a world of striking blues and greens with rust-coloured patches marking the mining operations that were the colony's economic lifeblood. From this distance, the planet appeared pristine, untouched—though Hayden knew better after their briefings.

“We are on our transitional orbital approach,” the pilot said. “Docking with Nova Esperança Station in five minutes.”

The orbital station grew larger in the viewport—a standard Confederation design, all gleaming metal and practical angles. Unlike the ornate stations orbiting Earth or the sprawling commercial hubs at Centauri Prime, this facility existed for a more utilitarian purpose: shipping the colony's mineral wealth to Confederation worlds.

“First time seeing a frontier colony?” Sharon asked, joining him at the viewport. Her voice carried a note of genuine curiosity rather than judgment, though her observant eyes studied his reaction as much as the world below.

Hayden nodded, his gaze fixed on the planet's surface where the geometric scars of industrial extraction contrasted with the natural beauty of untouched wilderness. “My previous off-world experience was limited to Core System diplomatic visits with my father. Those visits were exercises in political theatre—sanitised showcases designed to impress visiting dignitaries.”

“It changes your perspective,” Sharon said. “Seeing how the other ninety-eight per cent of humanity lives.” She gestured toward the mining complexes that sprawled across Nova Esperança’s continents like metallic spiderwebs. “The Core worlds thrive because places like this strip their planets bare to feed our comfort.”
