What is Kaine’s Crucible?
Hayden Kaine has been shaped for command since birth.
Elite Academy. Political bloodline. A future engineered down to the smallest detail.
Then a routine off-world observation mission goes wrong.
The official report says one thing.
What Kaine remembers is something else entirely.
This is the origin story of the man who will matter when the Shattered Empire era begins—a tight military science fiction novella about loyalty, control, and what happens when reality refuses to follow the script.
Why the Founder's Edition is Different
This is more than a prequel novella.
The Founder's Edition transforms the story into a dossier—a layered record of what happened, how it was explained, and what was deliberately hidden.
Inside the annex, you’ll find:
- official briefings and operational doctrine
- redacted intelligence files and personnel profiles
- conflicting reports and rewritten narratives
- internal vs public versions of key events
- psychological evaluations and training material
- fragments of truth buried inside controlled information
This edition is built for readers who like to dig beneath the surface—and question who controls the story.

The transport ship emerged from the Jump Gate into Nova Esperança's orbital space, the familiar blue-white flash of transdimensional exit giving way to the star-studded blackness of normal space. The abrupt shift from the strange, timeless sensation of jump travel left Hayden disoriented—his inner ear struggling to readjust to the return of artificial gravity while his stomach performed an uncomfortable somersault that reminded him why he'd never enjoyed gate transitions.
The transport's engines thrummed as they shifted from jump configuration to standard thrust, the deck plates vibrating beneath his feet. Around him, the other cadets were experiencing similar reactions—Wong gripping the edge of his seat with white knuckles, Ramirez consulting his datapad with the focused intensity of someone fighting motion sickness, and Sharon maintaining her typical stoic expression despite the slight pallor that suggested she wasn't immune to jump aftereffects either.
As his equilibrium returned and the queasiness subsided, Hayden pushed away from his acceleration couch and made his way toward the main viewport, drawn by the sight of their destination. The other cadets followed suit, their conversations a mixture of nervous excitement and curiosity as they caught their first glimpse of a true frontier world.
Nova Esperança hung below them—a world of striking blues and greens with rust-coloured patches marking the mining operations that were the colony's economic lifeblood. From this distance, the planet appeared pristine, untouched—though Hayden knew better after their briefings.
“We are on our transitional orbital approach,” the pilot said. “Docking with Nova Esperança Station in five minutes.”
The orbital station grew larger in the viewport—a standard Confederation design, all gleaming metal and practical angles. Unlike the ornate stations orbiting Earth or the sprawling commercial hubs at Centauri Prime, this facility existed for a more utilitarian purpose: shipping the colony's mineral wealth to Confederation worlds.
“First time seeing a frontier colony?” Sharon asked, joining him at the viewport. Her voice carried a note of genuine curiosity rather than judgment, though her observant eyes studied his reaction as much as the world below.
Hayden nodded, his gaze fixed on the planet's surface where the geometric scars of industrial extraction contrasted with the natural beauty of untouched wilderness. “My previous off-world experience was limited to Core System diplomatic visits with my father. Those visits were exercises in political theatre—sanitised showcases designed to impress visiting dignitaries.”
“It changes your perspective,” Sharon said. “Seeing how the other ninety-eight per cent of humanity lives.” She gestured toward the mining complexes that sprawled across Nova Esperança’s continents like metallic spiderwebs. “The Core worlds thrive because places like this strip their planets bare to feed our comfort.”

KAINE’S CRUCIBLE is a prequel to the SHATTERED EMPIRE series. It’s fast paced, action packed, and incredibly thought provoking. This is an amazing story with great characters. I couldn’t put it down.
I reviewed a free Advance Reader Copy of this book with no strings attached.
As I have said below, the title does fit the theme quite well, as this book helps set the scene for a better understanding of where Hayden Kaine was coming from when in the main series he turns on the Empire that nurtured and groomed him when young. Clearly this leads us on to more of his activities. Hopefully the sequel to Sovereigns of Ruin will be part of that..?
A thought-provoking read, a gripping standalone prequel to the Shattered Empire series, military scifi that's not afraid to raise/tackle important issues head-on.
Meet Cadet Kaine, tactical genius with natural aptitude for political science, heir to the Kaine political dynasty with both the burden and the privilege of his Senator father's expectations. Now he is sent with a select few on a standard observation assignment to report on "minor civil unrest" on a mining colony charmingly named Nova Esperança (The New Hope), an important source of essential materials for the Confederation. Are the grievances of the workers legitimate or have they been blown out of proportion by outside agitators? When textbook meets reality, Kaine is in for an eye-opening experience that has profound, shattering impact on his perception of reality.
"And for the first time in his orchestrated life, Hayden Kaine found himself questioning not just his current circumstances, but the framework through which he'd been taught to understand them."
Definitely a story for/of our times, poignant in how easily people accept the explanations offered to them when they have nothing to compare with, how rare is willingness to see beyond established narratives, and when you do question anything, how easy it is to get lost in the uncertainty. What sources can you trust, when even your own eyes might deceive you? Yet there is a hopeful undercurrent, despite everything. Pruden has written a memorable and engaging introduction to his captivating series that blends military scifi and action with deeper reflection on things that actually matter.
"This system isn't broken. It's working exactly as intended."
An important discussion-starter on "how easily perception could be shaped by context, by expectations, by the voices around you insisting on a particular interpretation of events", and how often the well-being of some depends on the pain of others, prosperity built on exploitation. When resource extraction has priority, productivity pressure trumps basic human dignity. Also greed can and often will have devastating consequences that often go unseen by the privileged masses and/or buried in bureaucracy. How many other uncomfortable truths has education omitted or twisted, in the Academy and in our own societies? Every narrative serves someone's purpose.
"Real change comes from people who know how the institutions function, not from outsiders throwing rocks at the walls."
Warmly recommended food for thought. 5*
Hayden Kaine’s life was all mapped out until he was dropped into a situation that made him question everything he’d been led to believe. Or was it set up? The story gives us insight into what started the shaping of Hayden Kaine. The pace of the story was very good and as usual for this author, he develops the characters well. I enjoyed the book very much and gave it 5 stars.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
A fast-paced and surprisingly introspective read. Cain's Crucible works as both a standalone story and a foundation piece for anyone coming to this universe fresh — it fills in the history of how Cain thinks and operates, tracing his formation from a young age through the pressures and situations that shaped him. If you've read the later books first, this one rewards you with context. If you're starting here, it pulls you in without requiring any prior knowledge.
What I appreciated most is that the book doesn't slow down to explain itself. It moves, and it trusts the reader to keep up. At the same time it gives you enough of Cain's interior world that you understand why he makes the decisions he does — not just what he does. That balance between action and character depth is harder to pull off than it looks.
Good military sci-fi that respects your time and leaves you wanting more. Recommended.
